What to Do in the Event of a Car Accident
At Lindow Insurance, we understand that accidents happen. Sometimes there’s no way to avoid a car accident no matter how conscious and careful you are on the roads. It’s best to be prepared and know how to handle an accident when it happens. Stay calm and use this helpful checklist next time you find yourself involved in an accident on the roadways.
- Safety is the First Priority.
If you’re involved in a car accident the first thing to do is to move out of the way of traffic and into a safe location, either on the side of the road or on an empty side street (if you can). Your safety and the safety of others is extremely important. Moving out of harm’s way to allows a safe space to inspect damage caused by the accident.
- Check Yourself & Your Vehicle.
Stop your vehicle and evaluate any injuries. After checking on yourself and the passengers in your car, check on the well being of the other parties involved and the damage to both vehicles.
- Call The Police.
Always call the police, even if the accident is a mild fender bender and nobody is injured. The police will assess the accident and file a legal accident report.
- Gather Information.
Exchange the appropriate information with the parties involved and gather information about the accident. This part is extremely important when it comes to dealing with your insurance agency. The first thing you need to do is make sure that you get the name and contact information of the parties involved in the accident. Don’t forget to take down the insurance company name and policy number from the other drivers and to document the vehicle information. With your smartphone, take pictures of the accident from multiple angles and be sure to document the location were the accident took place. This key information will be needed by your insurance company when you file your claim for the accident.
- Get Witness Information.
If there are witnesses to your accident make sure to take their contact information along with an account of their statement.
